reflections on the news media council

Note: Forgive me as I engage in one of my occasional sojourns into non-theological territory.

If you had read some sections of yesterday’s print media you would be forgiven for thinking the Australian Government was about to clamp down with dictatorial intent in regard to media freedom.

This is despite the fact that at this point only proposals have been made.

For those who have not yet had a chance to read about this, an inquiry into Australia’s print media released on Saturday has recommended a new body, a News Media Council, to oversee and regulate all news media organisations, including print, radio, TV and online.

The independent inquiry was partly motivated by the phone hacking scandal in Britain.

Forceful complaints have, predictably, come largely from the Murdoch News Limited media. Read the rest of this entry
